For the first time in over 20 years, three players from the same school have advanced to match play at the Polo Golf Junior Classic! Congratulations to Saddlebrook Prep student-athletes Karl Vilips, Won Jun Lee, and Khavish Varadan!

Karl locked up the #2 seed after finishing in a tie for second.

Won Jun and Khavish found themselves in a 7 person playoff, for 3 spots into matchplay. They both advanced through on the first playoff hole, securing spots into matchplay. I am still awaiting confirmation, but to most our knowledge, it is the first time three players from the same school have advanced into matchplay in over 20 years.

Karl will be playing Brandon Gillis from New Hampshire.

Won Jun is playing long-time, good friend, fellow All-American and fellow Korean, Eugene Hong. Eugene is currently ranked 2nd in the country. It is to most the biggest match of the morning.

Khavish will be playing the #1 seed, stroke play medalist Joseph Pagdin of England first round.

Won Jun Lee and Karl Vilips were named Rolex All-Americans – Congratulations!

Last night, Won Jun Lee and Karl Vilips were named Rolex All-Americans. Pictures have already been posted on our social media, but I have attached them for our site and everyone's use. Khavish Varadan would have been awarded, however he came up one event short of the number to quality (Khavish is currently our highest ranked, he played 5 needed 6 to be eligible).

Today is the first round of the 36-hole stroke play portion of the event, which leads to seeding and cut of the top 32 which qualify for match-play.

Won Jun Lee and Khavish Varadan both shot -1  71, putting them in a tie for 21st.

Karl Vilips shot a tournament low round of -7  65 to take the lead. Below is a link to the live scoring for our media.

Siemens Discovery Education Competition!

Siemens Discovery Education Competition!

Collecting and distributing foodstuffs for impoverished regions presents significant problems for charities. If the process is not accomplished efficiently then donated monies may not be allocated in a way that maximizes their impact, or donated foods may go to waste.

Saddlebrook freshman Gordon Brixi and his brother Garyk attempted to tackle the issue as a part of the Siemens Foundation’s Competition in Math, Science, and Technology. In a project titled “Investigating Alternative Cost Effective Relief Foods,” the brothers determined the greatest nutritional impact is derived from foods rich in choline and omega-3 fatty acids. They developed a “modular system to facilitate the localization of relief food production” which “provide[s] the required nutrient and caloric value at a significantly lower cost” to that of existing systems of distribution.

In addition to their research concerning the replacement of foods deficient in choline and omega-3 fatty acids, the pair devised a method of raising crops locally that maximized water in areas where the resource is limited.

For their efforts, the Siemens Foundation recognized the Brixi brothers as regional runners-up.

The Western Amateur

The Western Amateur

Both Won Jun Lee and Karl Vilips played solid opening rounds today against a very difficult field on a difficult course at the Western Amateur. Where they are playing against the world's top collegiate and International amateurs.

Stacy Lewis Junior All-Star Invitational Presented by KPMG

Khavish Varadan finished 3rd with rounds of 74-72-69. Which moves him up to the top 80 in the rankings and with 3 more events to move up a considerable amount.

Karl Vilips won the event, with a birdie on the first playoff hole; hitting it to 3 feet from 150 yards. Karl is the first middle schooler to break the top 10 in the rankings (I am awaiting a firm confirmation, but I can't think of anyone else who has ever accomplished this). Karl shot rounds of 72-70-68.
